Notes...
A musical Outer Limits...
Album
title from The Outer Limits - original series 1, episode 12: "It Crawled
Out Of The Woodwork" written by Joseph Stefano, directed by Gerd Oswald
(1963).
Another lost relic from the Auricle Archive. Largely culled from
unreleased and unfinished works from 1985, "It Crawled Out Of The
Woodwork" was originally presented as a various artists collection, as a
cassette release in 1989. It was limited to just 20 copies, with a green
print on clear acetate insert, each featuring a different experimental
photograph.
The idea of the release came about when we decided to mothball our studio
before setting up Ultima Thule. So, I diligently went through hours of
reel-to-reel tapes sussing out the choice unreleased gems. These largely
turned out to be quite uncharacteristic for Alto Stratus, even melodic and
"commercial" - by our standards anyway! You can tell that we'd been
attempting to master using keyboards in a new and intuitive manner, which was
certainly inspired by listening to a lot of Cluster, Roedelius, Moebius &
Plank, Asmus Tietchens, and such-like, and there's also a nod or two to the
explorative early Kevin O'Neill, and even some Throbbing Gristle or
Konstruktivits, as such a varied mixture of the melodic, industrial and the
occasionally downright weird!
When revisiting this recently, it seemed obvious to issue this as an Archive
disc, and all correctly attributed to Alto Stratus. Well, after all, Region 5
was just Alto Stratus using a lot of found sounds, turntables, etc., and then
there's a solo ditty by myself which was almost certainly the by-product of
an Alto Stratus session.
The two bonus tracks, recorded 5 months earlier, fit-in here well, and boosts
it to a great value 66 minute trek all virtually unlike any other Alto
Stratus album. It's destined to remain unique as well, as we long ago gave
away our Casio keyboards to our younger brother and sister! Also, there's no
way we'd ever do this sort of thing again. Those sounds were of that time,
and we're now exploring completely different territory.
