review... During the early days of Endgame
Steve spent a lot of time alone in the Tachyon Studio, especially when alone
in the house and could make lots of noise without disturbing anyone else. His
new way of working was largely down to exploiting the possibilities of using
a Portastudio and primitive computer techniques of sampling and looping, as
well as many other things. As such he went on to develop a whole new style of
sonic exploration. The most significant result of this sonic exploration was his
2001 solo release CONUNDRUM, a unique mixture of adventurous recycled
elements, in and out of phase systemic creations, often using techniques in
the realms of Steve Reich's "Come Out" phasing experiments, but done
in an altogether weirder/dense fashion, plus purely electroacoustic creations
involving the sounds of chimes, voices, and much in the way of plunderphonics
elements. As to Steve's influences one could quote Faust due to some of
the rasping tonalities used, with Nurse With Wound is another obvious factor
in his mind. The resultant concoction is unique, and extremely bizarre. by Alan Freeman (unpublished) |
