review...
A different beast to THE DEVIL'S WAVE, this disc has Dave
attempting a much more calculated and "classical" mode of sound
creation. The opening Sea Fever is a three part work all based on a
narration of the poem "Sea Fever" by John Masefield. This is serious
stuff, in the manner of vocal fragmentation works of the 1960s, although not
as accomplished as the classics of Luciano Berio, it's an intriguing
excursion, full of imaginative use of collage and processing. Rowan's
Notion is largely created by fragmenting and reprocessing 20 seconds of a
babies gurgles, laughs and cries. It is strangely surreal and quite unnerving
to say the least. Me Time uses vocal fragments and manipulation pretty
much in the vein of Trevor Wishart and Luc Ferrari, two artists I know David
quite admires, and is totally extrovert really. The final 15 minute opus The
Darkling Shades is my favourite work, being more synthetic
musique-concrete, it's subtle and organic. As a sound morphing artist he's
got it down to a fine art.
