releases... review... GAM - 1976 (AMC 017) MC Gunter Schickert has never been
a very prolific guitarist, but he's always been one of my favorites,
producing 3 superb albums; SAMTVOGEL, UBERFALLIG and KINDER IN DER WILDNIS
since he first appeared on the scene back in the early 1970's. In the mid
seventies reports began to filter through from Germany that he had formed a
band GAM. But nothing was ever released. Until now that is. This is a live rehearsal tape (released with Schickert's
permission), showing the band in full flight - side 1 especially. This is a
21 minute jam session full of powerful driving drums from Michael Leske and
the twin guitars of Axel Struck and Schickert creating spiraling patterns of
repeated echo guitar. This is classic stuff - as it sums up so much of what
the German cosmic rock sound was all about. Side 2 kicks off with a version
of the Schickert classic Apricot Brandy, which features Schickert on trumpet
for the opening section. A quieter track, it's always worked on a more
seductive level, gently shifting and building. The session ends with Fur
Elise, a great group showcase, with again Gunter's pulsating guitar
dominating the proceedings. It all adds up to a wonderful trip down memory lane for me
(yes - I'm that old), but it also gives a valuable insight into the work of
one of the true greats of German rock music for all you youngsters out there.
