A WAY IN TO THE ESCAPE ROUTE

On paper it looks pretty straight forward, an improv collective made up of two thirds of Endgame and likewise two thirds of Continuum. The usual suspects have been quoted in other reviews and (sadly) occasional press snippet.. "Take a dash of ECM, mix in some other worldly Theremin sounds season with a smattering of cosmic excursion and shove the whole thing through the notorious Freeman Blender (Patent pending folks!) and there you have it, The Escape Route!" And this was pretty much what I expected. But seconds in to opening the box and I realised that there was more, or to be more precise, I realised that there was so much more.

...Sonically speaking (to these ears at least) the group is actually several worlds removed from either the Endgame or Continuum sound. True to say that trademarks of both are apparent to the initiated but on first appearances Escape Route seem to specialise in creating vast oceans of ever shifting soundscapes, I guess that the newcomer will initially latch on to the vague ECM like tonal quality to many of the tracks, but don’t let this fool you, Flight from the debut disc simply burns white-hot whilst Scylla from the second is a veritable sea monster of a workout!

...for those of you looking for a new direction in music ... check the escape route!...
